an Industry-Led Initiative

UK Film Training Academy

The UK Film Training Academy (UKFTA) is an industry-led initiative that has been established to encourage and train new entrants in different areas of the burgeoning UK film industry.

Our training courses are designed and delivered by industry leaders in consultation with the film studios to
deliver the specialist skills they require at locations that allow our trainees to gain both hands-on and film set experience, enabling them to find immediate employment. The pilot courses have been a proven success (see Testimonials) and further courses will be announced (see Courses).

The skills shortage has meant there’s never been a better time to work within the film industry. There have been many media articles including the BBC and The Guardian reporting this and wages have significantly increased.

We aim to provide the industry with the skilled staff they so desperately need, so if you’re keen to work within film then our custom-designed courses are for you.

Initially based in London we have just opened an office in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and will be running courses within the North-East.

Making a full length film involves around 350 scenes. Lighting each and every scene –
making sure all of dozens of lighting rigs, hundreds of lamps and several miles of cable all work – that’s your job as a professional on-set lighting electrician.

Knowledge, speed, skill is essential. From the relative comfort of a big sound studio in Elstree to a howling gale half up a mountain – safety on set is paramount – and that’s your job, too.

Making a film is very expensive.. Over a matter of days, weeks and months, an army of crew, cast and support services descend on a series of sets to complete the production. Everyone must know what they’re doing; delays and disruptions can’t be allowed to happen.
